I love Christmas music. Not overproduced holiday pop songs, but the classic carols. I only listen to them one month of the year, but they fill me with nostalgia. I remember all the Christmas Eves spent singing Silent Night by candlelight in a darkened sanctuary. I chuckle at the memories of my family singing from different hymnals and arguing over the correct verses. And now I get teary-eyed watching my own children learn and sing these cherished songs.
Some of my favorites are the more plaintive tunes. Minor keys and slower rhythms resonate with my often melancholic mood around the holidays. I long for celebration and cheer, but I feel heavy and tired. I’m not ready to proclaim Joy to the World until I’ve had space to feel the cold of winter and mourn the lonely exiles. For me, this is the beauty of the Advent season. It gives me time to prepare, rather than jumping right into the festive spirit.
When I use this time of preparation to acknowledge the pain of the world around me, it makes my Christmas celebrations all the richer. I join gladly in the chorus of Glo-o-o-rias, filled with appreciation for the hope and good news of the season. My joy sparkles all the more in contrast to the sadness and fear.
Whatever this holiday season brings up for you, I invite you to find a song that helps you express it. Take a few moments to listen or sing along, welcoming whatever arises in you.
May this Holy season bring you tidings of comfort and joy!
