After dinner a few weeks ago, the kids were enjoying popsicles. Nothing fancy, just brightly colored ice on a stick. Between licks my son casually observed, “This tastes like heaven.” I couldn’t help thinking he was right. There was something sacred about this moment. My often-picky children were fully immersed in the goodness of their simple treat.
Children have a special gift for this kind of savoring. They notice every detail and find joy in the simple wonders of life. This summer has given me daily opportunities to join in their sense of awe. “Mommy, look!” they call to me, pointing out a bubble in their water glass or a bird in the backyard. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and I find myself seeing the world differently.
Adult life often demands that we focus on the negative. There are problems to be solved and work to be done. We have responsibilities and commitments. Our decisions must be carefully weighed against potential consequences. We check the weather and scan the news, always alert for potential danger. It’s easy to lose sight of joy, and of our connection to the source of all goodness.
Savoring is a sacred act. It is a spiritual practice that requires us to slow down and notice the shimmering details that bring pleasure to our lives. It’s stopping to appreciate the way the late afternoon sunlight dances through the trees. It’s resting in the warmth of a good hug. It’s singing your heart out to a favorite song. It’s eating a popsicle and enjoying the taste of heaven.
